The vertically integrated New Jersey cannabis dispensary Brute’s Roots opened for adult use recreational cannabis sales last week in Egg Harbor Township in Atlantic County in South Jersey.
Thus, Brute’s Roots is the 41st New Jersey cannabis dispensary to be open for adult use recreational cannabis sales.
Opening Brute’s Roots
As a locally owned and operated Woman-owned Business Enterprise (WBE) by its President Kelly Gatto, they are excited to feature expanded hours seven days a week for both medical cannabis patients and adult use cannabis consumers.
“My mother assisted me in decorating our dispensary to give a different vibe compared to a traditional dispensary, which everyone states they “feel at home” when they enter,” Gatto explained.
Brute’s Roots had their Grand Opening celebration last Friday, September 1st for their adult use cannabis dispensary expansion. They first had a “soft opening” where a few New Jersey cannabis customers were allowed to come buy products in late August.
Their dispensary opened for New Jersey medical cannabis sales in May. The dispensary is conveniently located right on the Black Horse Pike, close to the Atlantic City Expressway and the Garden State Parkway in Egg Harbor Township in Atlantic County.
As a vertically integrated company, they look forward to bringing their own Brute’s Roots flower to the New Jersey cannabis market this fall. Other quality products will be coming out later this year.
Brute’s Roots’ vertical New Jersey cannabis license permits them to cultivate, manufacture, dispense, or sell cannabis.
The NJ Cannabis Regulatory Commission (NJ-CRC) awarded them under the name Greenhouse Wellness one of the four vertically integrated New Jersey cannabis license awardees during the 2019-2021 medical cannabis license Request For Applications (RFA) process.

Growing New Jersey Cannabis
Brute’s Roots is in the process of our first big greenhouse harvest this week. They will have Brute’s Roots flower coming to the New Jersey cannabis market for the first time this fall.
They have a 35,000-square-foot indoor facility at the cultivation facility in Winslow. The team transplanted over 3,000 cannabis plants on July 3rd to their New Jersey cannabis growing site. The process was intense.
It received approval from the NJ-CRC to put up five greenhouses. Brute’s Roots is one of two cultivators in New Jersey growing cannabis in greenhouses.
So, they are branding their cannabis flower products grown in the greenhouses as “Sungrown” with a Sungrown logo on the packaging.
Cannabis grown under sunlight is known to be rich in terpenes, which many consumers enjoy.
Brute’s Roots also operates a more traditional East Coast indoor cannabis growing facility where light bulbs are used as a substitute for the sun. They should be ready to harvest that within the next couple of months.
Brute’s Roots’ adult use cannabis cultivation expansion permission is pending. They will be able to soon expand the sale of their flower to the New Jersey adult use cannabis market. However, the NJ-CRC must first approve it.
They also plan on beginning their manufacturing operations very soon. They will then produce products such as vapes, edibles, and concentrates.
The last phases of their Winslow site are still under construction. Brute’s Roots is working on finalizing their manufacturing operation details.
Local New Jersey Cannabis Entrepreneurs
Gatto and her partner Jimmy DiNatale were born and raised and still live in Atlantic County.
She was in real estate for 18 years.
“But after my father became sick with Pancreatic cancer years ago and I helped care for him, I decided to go back to school to become a registered nurse. I cared for critically ill patients in Atlantic City until transitioning into the cannabis industry,” Gatto explained.
DiNatale is a local entrepreneur and commercial developer. He has owned numerous businesses, including a demolition and asbestos company. DiNatale has worked to revitalize numerous commercial properties, including the former Lenox China factory in Galloway Township. In addition, he helped MPX/Ianthus secure the building formerly used by the Press of Atlantic City newspaper.
When getting into cannabis, DiNatale traveled across California, Canada, Maryland, Kentucky and in New Jersey touring cannabis cultivation facilities. He utilized these experiences to design their facility.
“We also did this for our dispensary layout, touring numerous dispensaries and going inside and making purchases at each one to see what works best for the customer experience,” Gatto explained.
