Intoxicating hemp-derived beverages like THC seltzer drinks sold in liquor stores are becoming increasingly popular.
Several national brands have reached out to Heady NJ, offering samples to review.
None of the THC seltzer drinks are as strong as drinks you can find on the underground legacy market, since they usually only have 5 or 10 mg of THC. However, newbies and those who prefer drinking to smoking might like THC seltzer drinks. Those worried about getting too high might like it too.
So, to drink enough to get really high, you need to like the flavor and be close to a bathroom.
Unlike flower, it might add some calories, and so it comes with health concerns around sugar, like other edibles.
All such drinks probably have fewer calories than Coca-Cola.
Like all weed products, THC drinks don’t make you hungover the next morning.
A smoking high is different than getting high through drinking due to how something that goes through the stomach or the lungs.
So how it affects you is different.
Cornbread Hemp Launches Pure THC Seltzer Drinks
Cornbread Hemp of Kentucky recently released peach and blueberry THC seltzer drinks.
It’s available in Blueberry Breeze, Raspberry Limeade, Peach Iced Tea, and Salted Watermelon.
Heady NJ was sent blueberry and peach. They come in packs of cans like soda.
They’re good. It’s notable that it’s not a strong taste. They are refreshing, especially when cold.
Both are unique flavors in the first place.
They are infused with 5mg of pure hemp-derived THC.
Cornbread said their THC seltzers have a fast-acting formula. They say you can enjoy the effects in as little as 15 minutes.
This is the problem with drinking versus smoking, where the effect is immediate since you inhale it through your lungs, it gets you higher. When you drink it, the stomach has to break it down.
“People are looking for healthier ways to relax, and our THC seltzers deliver exactly that,” said Eric Zipperle, Cornbred Co-Founder and CEO.
“THC beverages are an exciting new category with only a few offerings in the space,” said Jim Higdon, Co-Founder and CCO.
They said they made it with 5 mg of pure THC, 5g of sugar, and 30 calories per can.
Cann Drinks
A celebrity-backed company based in Los Angeles has made Cann THC seltzer drinks, which are becoming popular as well.
Their cans are a little smaller than the others.
Each Cann is thoughtfully formulated with 2 milligrams of THC plus 4 milligrams of CBD.
In a press release, Cann said their seltzers have five all-natural ingredients with a strength that is similar to a beer or glass of wine. There are no artificial sweeteners or flavors, sugar substitutes, or cannabis taste.
They’re pretty good.
Cann has a lot of celebrity investors like noted actress and businesswoman Gwyneth Paltrow, the actress Rebel Wilson, Ruby Rose, Darren Criss, basketball player Baron Davis, Tove Lo, Casey Neistat, and rapper Bre-Z.
“Cann sits at the intersection of two powerful trends we’ve been monitoring at Goop for some time: the ‘sober curious’ and ‘cannabis curious’ movements,” said Paltrow in a press release.
Gwyneth Paltrow invested even more money last year in November 2024.
Mystic Orbit THC Soda
Untitled Art just launched Mystic Orbit infused drink sodas.
With 4 mg of THC they are even weaker than the standard 5 or 10.
It comes in a soda-sized can versus the others, which are often taller and skinnier. They say it’s designed to uplift your mood and your taste buds.
They have uniquely named flavors like “Galactic Grape” and “Planetary Peach.”
The “Cosmic Orange” one was pretty good. Since they make sodas, it’s different than the flavored infused THC seltzers.
The Lunar Lemon was pretty good too.
While it might not be too cosmic, it was fun to drink.
Wynk Drinks
Wynk is another company that sent Heady NJ drinks to review.
They make a THC-infused hemp seltzer too that comes in multiple flavors. Their “Juicy Mango” flavor was pretty good.
Their cans had 5 mg of THC and 5 mg of CBD each. The can had a label that noted it would be about 10 to 15 minutes to hit the onset of feeling high.
Wynk’s lineup includes 2.5mg and 5mg THC + CBD seltzers in flavors like Black Cherry Fizz, Lime Twist, Juicy Mango, and Tangerine.
They recently introduced a 10mg THC lemonade seltzer line, available in Lemonade, Strawberry Lemonade, and Raspberry Lemonade. Wynk is available for purchase online in 37 states and in retail locations across 18 states.
The Rise of Infused Hemp Drinks
Made with less than 0.3% THC by weight, hemp seltzer drinks are 2018 Farm Bill compliant and 100% federally legal. The bill must be renewed soon since it expires in September.
Selling hemp seltzer drinks is becoming a big business as different actors and major alcoholic companies are getting in and throwing their weight around.
People also realize that weed is better for you than drinking. So, alcohol sales are down, so companies need new products to sell.
The Farm Bill passed by Congress probably wasn’t intended to federally legalize weed through a loophole. A lot of gas stations and mediocre hemp products can be found easily. Some, of course, are better than others.
Because of their shady reputation, many longtime potheads and cannabis leaders prefer the more restrictive state legal cannabis market products
Intoxicating hemp remains controversial. Texas Governor Greg Abbott, a Republican, recently vetoed a ban. New Jersey is likely to see more hemp news this week at the end of the Legislative session and fiscal year.
