Trenton Cracks Down on Underground Legacy Operator Moe Weed with Arrest

After years of toleration, police arrested underground legacy operator Moses “Moe Weed” Sutton in Trenton as part of a larger crackdown.

He was charged with two counts of third-degree distribution of a controlled dangerous substance. He was released pending future court appearances.

According to TAPinto, Mercer County Prosecutor Janetta D. Marbrey, the Mercer County Narcotics Task Force, the New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice, and the Trenton Police Department have been investigating “the illegal distribution of marijuana in the city of Trenton.”

They were investigating Moe Weed for a few months, apparently.

The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office said it “received information from various sources, including community members, public websites, and social media accounts.”

Moe Weed Fights Back

Moe Weed believes the city is discriminating against him and has launched a lawsuit.

According to the Mercer County Prosecutor, he has a smoke shop at 1114 South Broad Street. They said he was reportedly “selling marijuana products without the required licensing.”

Moe Weed posted on Facebook that “My business is currently a LEGAL cannabis hemp business, selling legal cannabis products. Thanks to the Hemp Farm Bill of 2018.”

He was first raided in 2021.

“In 2021, I faced extreme police brutality when the Trenton Police Crime Division entered my store without a warrant and violated my constitutional rights (video coming soon!!!) I was excessively pepper sprayed and left in a hot, non-ventilated police vehicle, gasping for air and fighting for my life. When I requested medical attention, I was laughed at and denied care. The ambulance was waived off,” Moe Weed said.

He wrote, “that case was DISMISSED at the end of 2024.”

Moe Weed explained that he had been working very hard to open a legal adult-use cannabis dispensary.

Initially, he was approved by the Trenton Zoning Board and Cannabis Board.

However, “on June 6, 2024, the City Council voted against our application — not on the merits, but due to BIAS and PERSONAL VENDETTA,” Moe Weed wrote.

He believes that At Large Councilwoman Jasi Mikae Edwards targeted him. And this is why his dispensary application did not receive City Council approval.

Moe Weed believes his was the only cannabis application denied by the City Council. He also does not believe any dispensaries in Trenton are independently owned.

“CORPORATIONS GET THE LICENSES, while Black-owned businesses get targeted, stalled, and denied,” Moe Weed wrote on Facebook.

He remains undaunted and willing to fight the system.

“I am now pursuing a lawsuit against the City of Trenton and Jasi Edwards for their discriminatory, biased, and unfair treatment,” Moe Weed noted.

He is a serial entrepreneur who has had multiple smoke shop locations. That includes one downtown on State Street, where he wanted to include an educational component. He previously had a cell phone repair shop. Notably, in 2021, he was eager to donate money to Trenon to fix potholes.

Trenton and Underground Legacy Operators

In summer 2021, Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora hosted a forum at City Hall that featured a few underground legacy operators gifting.

Trenton has since seen a great proliferation of underground smoke shops.

Heady NJ has heard licensed dispensaries have been complaining about them.

Apparently, it was too much, and now there is a crackdown.
